Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another round of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants can get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at the outset, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game simply enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi/low offers an exciting array of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have several individuals trying for the high hand, along with a few shooting for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
